We Graded Every Protein & Snack Bar A–F. From Real-Food Bars to Candy With Protein Dust.
Bar aisles are a minefield: the same shelf holds 20-gram real-food protein bars and granola bars that are basically candy in a foil wrapper. So we ran 23 of the most popular bars through the same 6-dimension Labelgrade — protein bars, fruit-and-nut bars, and granola bars all on one scale. The good news: the category mostly earns its reputation. Most bars land in the solid B range, and the spread runs in a sensible line — the high-protein, short-label bars (RXBAR, Barebells, Quest, Aloha) sit at the top, while the sweeter granola and fruit bars drift toward the bottom. It’s less an exposé than a map: from real-food bars to candy with protein dust, here’s exactly where each one falls.
The verdict
23 bars graded, and it’s a three-way tie at the top: Aloha Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Barebells Caramel Cashew and Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough all hit B+ (83); the Clif Kit’s Organic Dark Chocolate Almond Coconut came last at C+ (68) — separated on added sugar and ingredients, not protein.

How we graded these
Each product is scored on six dimensions — protein density, ingredient quality, added sugar, sodium, fiber, and saturated fat — combined into a 0–100 score and a letter grade. Every number comes from the product’s own label, verified against USDA FoodData Central. The grade is absolute (relative to all packaged foods), which is why a whole category can land in the same band. See the full methodology. Last graded 2026-06-04.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which bar scored best?
Three bars tied at the top — Aloha Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Barebells Caramel Cashew and Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, all at B+ — with RXBAR and Pure Protein right behind. They share a pattern: high protein, short ingredient lists, and little added sugar. See the ranked table above for the full order and each bar’s weakest dimension.
Why did the Clif Kit’s bar score lowest?
It’s a fruit-and-nut granola bar, not a protein bar, so it brings less protein and more added sugar — and added sugar and protein density are two of our six dimensions. At C+ it isn’t a fail; it’s just out-scored by the higher-protein, lower-sugar bars above it. The grade is relative to all packaged foods, not only to other bars.
Are protein and snack bars healthy?
It depends entirely on the bar, which is the whole point of the spread. The high-protein, short-label bars are a genuinely good on-the-go snack; the sweeter granola and fruit bars are closer to a treat. A B-range grade means "a solid choice"; the lower scores mean "fine occasionally, but read the label." The report card just keeps that comparison honest.
How is the grade calculated?
Six dimensions — protein density, ingredient quality, added sugar, sodium, fiber, and saturated fat — into a 0–100 score and a letter grade, from each product’s own label, verified against USDA data. See our methodology page.
