We Graded Every Ready-to-Drink Protein Shake A–F. Every Single One Landed in the B Range.
Most of our report cards are an exposé. This one isn’t. We graded every ready-to-drink protein shake we could find on the same 6-dimension Labelgrade, and every single one landed in the B range — this is a genuinely strong aisle. The shakes are built to do one thing, deliver clean protein in a bottle, and most of them do it well. The twist is at the very top: the plant-based OWYN edged out the dairy favorites everyone reaches for. The gaps between shakes are small and come down mostly to added sugar and ingredients — so this report card is less ‘who failed’ and more ‘how the genuinely-good options separate.’
The verdict
Every shake we graded landed B-range — the plant-based OWYN Pro Elite Chocolate took the top at B+ (82), ahead of Iconic Vanilla and Fairlife Core Power Elite; even last-place Boost High Protein Chocolate held a respectable B- (70), separated on added sugar, not protein.

How we graded these
Each product is scored on six dimensions — protein density, ingredient quality, added sugar, sodium, fiber, and saturated fat — combined into a 0–100 score and a letter grade. Every number comes from the product’s own label, verified against USDA FoodData Central. The grade is absolute (relative to all packaged foods), which is why a whole category can land in the same band. See the full methodology. Last graded 2026-06-04.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which protein shake scored best?
The plant-based OWYN Pro Elite Chocolate topped the list at B+, with Iconic Vanilla and Fairlife Core Power Elite right behind. The winners pair strong protein with clean ingredients and little added sugar. See the ranked table above for the exact order and each shake’s weakest dimension.
Why did the Boost shake score lowest?
It still earned a B-, so "lowest" here is far from a fail. It’s edged out mainly on added sugar and ingredient quality — two of our six dimensions — by the leaner, cleaner formulas above it. In a category this tight, a few grams of added sugar is what separates the pack.
Are ready-to-drink protein shakes healthy?
As a convenient protein source, yes — and the fact that every shake here landed B-range backs that up. They’re a reasonable way to hit a protein target on the go. The thing to watch is added sugar, which is what mostly separates the better picks from the rest. The report card keeps that comparison honest.
How is the grade calculated?
Six dimensions — protein density, ingredient quality, added sugar, sodium, fiber, and saturated fat — into a 0–100 score and a letter grade, from each product’s own label, verified against USDA data. See our methodology page.
