Highest-Protein Packaged Foods, Ranked
The best high-protein food is not the one with the biggest number on the front — it is the one that delivers protein with the fewest extra calories. We rank every product in our database by protein efficiency: calories per gram of protein, then total protein per serving. Lean, dense, no filler.

How we scored High-protein fit
Scored on calories per gram of protein (≤5 cal/g is elite, like nonfat Greek yogurt and white fish), with a bonus for high absolute protein per serving (≥25 g).
Every score is computed from the same USDA nutrition and ingredient data we use for the public Labelgrade, applied to the documented rules in our diet-fit engine — no proprietary "score brewing." All nutrition verified against USDA FoodData Central. See how Labelgrade grades food. Last refreshed 2026-06-03.

What counts as a "high-protein" food?
The FDA lets a product claim "high protein" if it provides at least 20% of the Daily Value (10 g) per serving. But that threshold ignores calories — a 300-calorie bar with 10 g of protein technically qualifies. Our high-protein fit score uses a stricter, more useful measure: calories per gram of protein. Under 5 cal/g is elite (nonfat Greek yogurt, white fish, egg whites, plain whey). 5–10 cal/g is very good. Above 15 cal/g, you are mostly buying calories with a protein garnish.
Which packaged food has the most protein per calorie?
Nonfat strained Greek yogurt, plain whey isolate, egg whites, white fish (tuna, cod), and turkey breast jerky cluster at the top — roughly 3–5 calories per gram of protein. Cottage cheese and nonfat skyr follow close behind. The ranked list above is computed live from USDA data, so it reflects exactly what is in our catalog right now.
How much protein do I actually need per day?
For general health, 0.8 g per kg of body weight. For active people and those building or preserving muscle, most evidence supports 1.6–2.2 g per kg (roughly 0.7–1.0 g per pound). See our full guide on daily protein for the calculation and how to spread it across meals.
